CAIRO — Egyptian government ministers are considering removing custom fees on cars that are shipped to the country by Egyptian expatriates returning home.

The Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs, Nabila Makram, formed the committee of ministers to address the issue.

Makram said he had discussed the subject with representatives from the embassies from Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, to hear their experience with similar schemes.

Representatives from the Egyptian financial and Interior ministries, the Central Bank and the Customs Department also attended.

During the sessions, the Moroccan embassy representative reviewed the country's custom exemption for cars, based on a partial exemption according to the vehicles engine capacity, and if an expatriate was over 60 years old, had spent at least 15 years abroad, and on the condition the vehicle would not be sold for five years after the date of shipping.

The Tunisian representative reviewed their trial of a similar scheme, which stipulated that the expatriate must be over the age of 18, and that the car should not be valued over EUR 30,000.

The three representatives said that the partial customs exemption was a benefit to their national economy, and that it encouraged expatriates to return back with their investments to their home countries.
