IISR holds national education day in memory of Azad

RIYADH — The International Indian School Riyadh (IISR) organized Yaum-e-Urdu recently and paid rich tribute to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India, on the occasion of his birth anniversary. The students participated enthusiastically in the events outlined for the day to strengthen and raise the quality of education to greater heights. The program commenced by invoking the blessings of the Almighty with recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an followed by its translation. The students cheerfully welcomed the chief guest Dr. Hifz ur Rahman, first secretary, Embassy of India, and Observer of International Indian Schools in the Kingdom, by presenting him with an attractive bouquet and a card. Mrs. Asma Shah, principal-in-charge, girls’ section, delivered the welcome address and the girls of primary section sang the welcome song. The cultural activities included the rendition of a ghazal (Urdu poetry) by Zeba Almas and a musical performance based on gender discrimination by the senior secondary section. The proceedings were smartly compered by Ramsha of class X. The Urdu Speech Competition was an occasion to remember with Maulana Azad’s pivotal contribution in laying the foundation of the education system; his involvement in the political and social growth of independent India and his role in the freedom struggle being stressed. Students of middle, secondary and senior secondary sections participated in the competition and the winners were awarded medals and certificates by the Dr. Hifz ur Rahman and Dr. SM Shaukat Perwez, principal and HOI. Rahma Shah of class XI was adjudged the ‘Best Speaker’. The chief guest applauded all the participants and performers for their hard work and commended the school officials for putting up an impressive show. A formal vote of thanks was given on behalf of the staff and students appreciating the presence and guidance of the distinguished guests. — SG
