07 Dec 2017
RIYADH — A vascular surgery team at King Saud Medical City (KSMC) achieved a milestone by successfully treating a 50-year-old man with a complicated abdominal aortic and iliac aneurysm (swelling of the main artery in the abdomen and pelvis).
The successful surgery was considered the first of its kind in the Middle East.
The patient underwent successful stenting in both the abdominal and pelvic swellings, with a diameter of 5.5 cm and 3.8 cm respectively.
The procedure, designed to prevent the rupture of the abdominal aortic aneurysm, was performed by the vascular and endovascular surgery team at the medical city in collaboration with interventional radiology team.
According to Dr. Tania Guzman, consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon who led the team of surgeons, the patient made a fast recovery after the procedure and was discharged three days later. — SG
