RIYADH - The Finnish community here celebrated the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence with great national enthusiasm with a grand reception at the embassy.
The venue was illuminated with blue and white (the colors of Finnish Flag) on the centenary occasion of Finnish independence.
Prince Faisal Bin Bandar Al Saud, Governor of Riyadh, was the guest of honor. The celebration in the embassy included the attendance of senior officials, businessmen, friends and more than a hundred Finns, who came from near and far.
The national anthems of Saudi Arabia and Finland were played followed by the cake cutting ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, the Finnish Ambassador Pekka Voutilainen praised the Finns’ persistence and hard work in building a nation that is world renowned in the fields of education, innovation, health, well-being and equality. The success story is remarkable remembering that in 1917 Finland was still one of the poorest countries in Europe.
He also thanked the Guest of Honor Prince Faisal for attending the event and highlighted the great friendship between Saudi Arabia and Finland.
Some Finnish companies were also present at the celebration, Nokia being one of the major ones. Finnish dairy producer Valio offered a tasty cheese selection and Finnish spring water by Nord Water kept the guests hydrated throughout the evening.
