Trump denounces ‘brutal and corrupt’ Iranian regime

Washington/Tehran — President Donald Trump praised Iranian protesters on Tuesday for acting against Tehran’s “brutal and corrupt” regime after days of bloody unrest.
“The people of Iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime,” Trump tweeted, a day after calling for regime change in Iran.
“All of the money that President Obama so foolishly gave them went into terrorism and into their ‘pockets.’ The people have little food, big inflation and no human rights. The US is watching!”
The comments were Trump’s latest hint of a possible US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers.
Nine Iranians were killed in Isfahan province during anti-government protests on Monday night as security forces struggled to contain the boldest challenge to the clerical leadership since unrest in 2009.
According to state television six people were killed in the central town of Qahderijan and one in Khomeini Shahr.
In addition, a member of Basij militia and a police officer were killed in Najaf Abad on Monday.
Overall, at least 21 people have died in Iran during the protests, according to state media.
The protests began Thursday in Mashhad over Iran’s weak economy and a jump in food prices and have expanded to several cities, with some protesters chanting against the government and supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
Hundreds of people have been arrested and a prominent judge on Tuesday warned that some could face death penalty trials. — Agencies
