England beats Cricket Australia XI by 5 wickets in warmup
11 Jan 2018
SYDNEY — Moeen Ali took two wickets for 28 runs in 10 overs as England warmed up for the start of its five-match One-Day International series against Australia with a five-wicket win over a Cricket Australia XI on Thursday.
England restricted the home side to 258 for nine then cruised to victory inside 41 overs. Alex Hales, 52 runs off 39 balls, and Eoin Morgan, 81 off 76, led England.
England played without captain Joe Root, who was still recovering from stomach problems that forced him to retire ill on the final day of the fifth Sydney test, where Australia clinched an innings victory for a 4-0 series win.
Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes, Tom Curran and spinner Ali were the only Test players appearing for England on Thursday. The first ODI is on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Meanwhile, Cameron White will fancy playing his first ODI in three years after replacing the injured Chris Lynn in the Australia squad for the five-match series against England.
A calf injury to explosive batsman Lynn opened an unlikely door for 34-year-old White, who played the last of his 88 ODIs in 2015 and has since been critical of a pro-youth policy he felt did not reward the performance of senior players.
Cameron's in very good form, as his figures demonstrate. He's playing very well, selector Trevor Hohns said in a statement on Thursday, referring to White's impressive displays for Melbourne Renegades in this year's Big Bash League.
White's unexpected selection ahead of Glenn Maxwell follows Tim Paine's shock and inspired inclusion in Australia's Ashes-winning.
ICC approves
Perth Stadium
Perth Stadium is set to take over hosting duties from the historic WACA ground after the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved the newly-built venue to host all international formats, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Thursday.
The 50,000-seater stadium will now become the main venue for Cricket in Western Australia, and the fifth ODI between Australia and England on Jan. 28 will be the first major sporting event held at the ground.
The stadium is a magnificent asset for the state of WA and its sports fan, said Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland. We very much look forward to bringing this big Australia-England one-day match to Perth to the Stadium on Jan. 28.
The state-of-the-art stadium will also host matches from the domestic Big Bash League, Australian rules football and soccer. ICC match referee Richie Richardson said the stadium was world class after an inspection.
The WACA, which has hosted cricket matches since the early 1890s, will be turned into a boutique ground with a capacity of 10,000-15,000 by the local board.
England refrains
from major changes
England's Cricket selectors refrained Wednesday from a radical shakeup of the Test squad despite a 4-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia.
England called up Lancashire batsman Liam Livingstone and returning paceman Mark Wood in its 16-man squad for the two-match Test series in New Zealand in March.
Gary Ballance, Jake Ball and Tom Curran were the only absentees from the group of players led by captain Joe Root in Australia. England play two warm-up matches in Hamilton before its winter schedule finally comes to a close with Tests in Auckland on March 22 and Christchurch on March 30.
As has been the case with the last three squad announcements, Ben Stokes appears with a caveat next to his name, as the all-rounder waits to find out if he will be charged by the Crown Prosecution Service following an incident outside an English nightclub on Sept. 25.
England Squad: Joe Root (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Mason Crane, Ben Foakes, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood. — Agencies
