RALEIGH, N.C. - Dougie Hamilton scored twice, Mike Smith made 38 saves and the Calgary Flames ran their winning streak to seven straight games with a 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday. Even with leading scorer Sean Monahan out with the flu, the Flames controlled the entire game. Matt Stajan opened the scoring at 6:01 of the first period with his first goal of the season. Hamilton made it 2-0 later in the first period. Hamilton scored again early in the third for his first multigoal game of the season. Matthew Tkachuk added an insurance goal late and Johnny Gaudreau had two assists to extend his point streak to seven games in a row. Scott Darling made 26 saves for Carolina, which has lost four of five. Lee Stempniak scored with 4:31 remaining to avoid a shutout. The Flames were faster and physical from the start. Barely six minutes in, Curtis Lazar took the puck from his own blue line all the way to the front of the Carolina net, beating two defenders, but lost the puck before could get a shot off. The loose puck ended up right on Stajan’s stick, and he fired a wrister past Darling for his first goal in 37 games dating to last season. The Flames doubled their lead with 1:13 left in the first period. A huge hit by Micheak Ferland at center ice forced a Hurricanes turnover and resulted in a 3-on-2 Calgary rush, and Hamilton snapped home a one-timer to make it 2-0. Flames captain Mark Giordano received a match penalty for an illegal check to the head and was ejected in the third period. He hrew his shoulder into the face of Sebastian Aho, who was preparing to shoot. Aho remained down on the ice for several minutes, had to be helped off and didn’t return. Canucks 3, Wild 2 (OT): Brandon Sutter’s overtime goal gave Vancouver a 3-2 comeback victory over Minnesota in St. Paul. Sutter was a hero in his first game back after missing 21 games with a problem in his mid-section. He took Alex Edler’s long pass from behind the net just outside the Wild blue line, eluded a defender, and beat Devan Dubnyk with a shot from the slot. Penguins 5, Rangers 2: Phil Kessel’s second-period wrister beat Henrik Lundqvist and accounted for his 700th career NHL point and the decisive tally in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 victory against New York at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Kessel’s goal, his 20th of the season, was the Penguins’ second goal in a span of 1:15 after Dominik Simon’s first tally of the season at 13:15 of the second tied the game at 2. Patric Hornqvist, Sidney Crosby and Carl Hagelin each added a goal for the Penguins, who rattled off their fourth straight victory and improved to 5-1-0 since the calendar flipped. Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 0: Petr Mrazek stopped all 27 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season and the 12th of his career, and Detroit cruised past host Chicago. Dylan Larkin, Mike Green, Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi each scored as Detroit snapped a two-game skid. The Red Wings shut out an opponent for the second time in 43 games. Chicago was held scoreless for the third time this season. The Blackhawks have lost two of their past three games. — Agencies
