Saudi Gazette report JEDDAH — Relatives of an elderly patient who died while under medical care accused a Jeddah hospital of negligence, Al-Madina newspaper reported on Monday. Mohammad Asiri, 77, was transported to Al-Thaghr Hospital by Red Crescent paramedics in a critical state. He was diagnosed with sepsis, a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to infection causes injury to own tissues and organs. Most of his vital organs, including the respiratory system had failed. According to a statement issued by the Health Affairs, the man was put under intensive care as soon as he arrived at the emergency ward. However, the hospital did not have specialists and facilities to treat the patient’s condition, and he was immediately referred to another hospital. However, the patient died before he could be transferred to the specialist hospital. The Health Affairs concluded that his death was unavoidable considering his highly critical health condition and age. Sultan Asiri, the patient’s son, refuted the directorate’s statement, which said his father was taken to the emergency ward and put under intensive care. “We stayed in the hospital for six days. He was never taken into any intensive care. The hospital told us they do not have free beds to take my father in. We demanded to be transferred to another hospital. My father needed to go through dialysis but the hospital did not have the equipment,” said Asiri. He said there was no morgue at Al-Thaghr so they transferred his father to King Abdulaziz Hospital. “I got a call from Al-Thaghr Hospital saying they would resolve the case of my father by transferring him to another hospital if I dropped the complaint that I had lodged. I told the hospital that the case of my father had ended with his death. Two days later, his eighth day in the hospital and the second day after his death, I got a call from the hospital saying they found a spare bed for him in another hospital. My father had already died,” said Asiri.
