Red-hot Griezmann hits four
01 Mar 2018
MADRID — Antoine Griezmann scored all four goals as Atletico Madrid swatted aside Leganes 4-0 in La Liga Wednesday to cut the gap on leader Barcelona to four points.
Barcelona visits Las Palmas Thursday before hosting Atletico Sunday.
French forward Griezmann bagged two goals in each half in a stunning display to become the first Atletico player this century to score hat tricks in successive league games.
He also became the first Atletico player to net four in a match since Radamel Falcao in 2012 and brought up his 100th goal for the club he joined in 2014.
“It’s a great feeling, the team are on an upward curve,” coach Diego told a news conference. “We’re in good form, we need to focus on carrying on improving as a side. We’ve tried to be tighter than we were last time out.
“Leganes has a couple of chances, but we improved and were able to seal the win.”
Di Maria scores for PSG
Angel Di Maria grabbed two goals as Paris Saint-Germain downed fierce rival Marseille 3-0 Wednesday to reach the French Cup semifinals, hours after the club confirmed Neymar will undergo surgery on his fractured foot.
The Argentina international replaced the injured Neymar in the starting line-up at the Parc des Princes and struck the opening goal in first-half stoppage time.
Di Maria added a second shortly after the interval before Edinson Cavani wrapped up a second 3-0 victory over Marseille in four days, following Sunday’s home league win that came at a heavy cost.
AC Milan in cup final
AC Milan will face holder Juventus in the Coppa Italia final after beating Lazio 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout Wednesday which followed three and a half hours of goalless football between the two sides.
Earlier, Juventus scored from a disputed penalty to beat Atalanta 1-0 and reach the final for the fourth season in a row, winning their two-leg semi-final 2-0 on aggregate.
Having played to a 0-0 draw in their first leg at the San Siro one month ago, Lazio and AC Milan produced a repeat performance in Wednesday’s return at a freezing Stadio Olimpico despite creating plenty of chances.
Spurs in FA Cup quarters
Fernando Llorente scored a second-half hat trick as Tottenham Hotspur advanced into the quarterfinals of the FA Cup with a 6-1 win over lowly Rochdale in a fifth-round roplay at a snowy Wembley Wednesday.
The match had threatened to be overshadowed by fresh controversy involving the Video Assistant Referee, who was repeatedly called upon in a first half that ended level at 1-1.
But Llorente’s treble put the result beyond doubt with Son Heung-Min, who had opened the scoring on the night, making it 5-1 in the 65th minute.
Spurs, eight-times FA Cup winners, will now be away to Premier League rival Swansea — Llorente’s former club — in the quarterfinals as they bid to win a first major trophy since lifting the 2008 English League Cup.
“I feel good,” Llorente told BT Sport. “I’m happy because the team have won and it’s important to be in the quarterfinal. We know Swansea very well — they’ve improved a lot and it will be difficult.”
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, reflecting on the use of the VAR, said: “It’s too early to judge the system but it’s not easy. I think the referees in the Premier League are the best in Europe”. — Agencies
