Saudi UN envoy condemns Syrian regime's violations in eastern Ghouta

GENEVA – Saudi Ambassador to the United Nations Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel thanked the United Kingdom for its initiative to call an emergency discussion session to highlight the deteriorating humanitarian situation and serious human rights violations in the eastern Ghouta, which is under siege by the Syrian regime and foreign militias cooperating with it, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Friday.
In an address to the Human Rights Council during the meeting on the situation in Syria, Al-Wasel pointed out that eastern Ghouta is exposed to the same situation eastern Aleppo was exposed to last year. The Syrian regime has intensified its military campaign recently on eastern Ghouta, besieged since 2013. This is a flagrant violation of international laws and an undermining of international efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis politically, in accordance with the principles of the Geneva Declaration and Security Council Resolution 2254.
Al-Wasel strongly condemned the serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws, the continued denial of access to humanitarian aid, the indiscriminate use of heavy weapons, aerial bombardments and the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime against civilians in Syria, particularly in eastern Ghouta. – SPA
