AUSTIN, Texas — Americans Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson are set for a heavyweight showdown at the WGC-Dell Match Play after winning their quarterfinals in Texas Saturday. Second seed Thomas, in brilliant form all week, continued his hot run with a 2&1 win over fellow American Kyle Stanley at Austin Country Club. Watson was even more dominant, thrashing Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat 5&3, and Swedish 13th seed Alex Noren will face American 32nd seed Kevin Kisner in the other semi-final on Sunday morning. Noren beat Australian Cameron Smith 4&2 while Kisner crushed Englishman Ian Poulter 8&6. Thomas did not play quite as smoothly against Stanley as in his previous two matches, both of which only went 13 holes, but still had enough in the tank. Thomas is projected to assume the world No. 1 ranking from fellow American Dustin Johnson if he makes the final Sunday but he will have to overcome 35th seed Watson, a two-time US Masters champion who won the Los Angeles tour stop at Riviera last month. Noren, meanwhile, was too good for 46th-ranked Smith, though it was not all smooth sailing for the Swede. Noren has come close to winning this year, a playoff loser to Jason Day at Torrey Pines in San Diego in January. Kisner’s match against 58th seed Poulter was one-sided from the start. Kerr blows 5-stroke lead Cristie Kerr blew a five-stroke lead Saturday in the Kia Classic to set up a final-round showdown at Aviara Golf Club. A day after shooting an 8-under 64 to open the big lead, Kerr had a 75 to drop a stroke behind playing partner Lizette Salas, Ji Eun-hee and Kim In-kyung. Kerr was tied with Caroline Hedwall, Wei-Ling Hsu and Cindy LaCrosse, and four players were another shot back in the final event before the major ANA Inspiration next week at Mission Hills. The 2015 winner at Aviara, Kerr followed the double bogey with a two-putt birdie on the short par-4 16th and had a bogey on the par-4 18th. Ji had a 67 to match Salas (69) and Kim (69) at 11-under 205. Salas had a chance to pull away, but missed birdie putts of 1 1/2 feet on 16 and 2 1/2 feet on the par-5 17th. Anna Nordqvist had a 66 to top the group at 9 under. Top-ranked Shanhan Feng (69) and Lydia Ko (70) were four strokes back at 7-under. Inbee Park, coming off a victory last week in the Founders Cup in Phoenix, was 6 under after a 68. Singapore winner Michelle Wie had a 68 to get to 5-under. — Agencies
