ABHA – Many residents of the Asir province have called upon Health Minister Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah to pay a surprise visit to public hospitals to understand the reality of the state of healthcare in the region. They said healthcare services in the region have gone from bad to worse as a result of the ministry’s negligence.
They said the Health Department’s response to a video clip showing transport of two injured men on a truck and their treatment at a Khamis Mushayt Hospital was not based on facts. The department should have formed a committee to investigate the incident instead of inventing justifications.
The video clip, which went viral on social media, showed two young men calling for medical help staying near the Khamis Mushayt hospital’s emergency section while a group of onlookers asked hospital authorities to provide them with quick treatment.
The two individuals who were reportedly taken to hospital on the back of a truck by first-aid volunteers were bleeding profusely due to wounds they sustained in an accident. The social media report indicated that an elderly woman found the two injured men along the road before they were transported to the hospital.
The Health Affairs in the region quickly responded to the report, saying the hospital had provided the two young men with first-aid without delay. But social media activists called upon the minister to visit public hospitals in the region secretly to know their real condition.
“Nobody can keep silent on this matter,” said a tweet by an activist. “This is what we have seen and we can't believe this,” he added.
“Honorable minister, are you satisfied with this condition?” asked another activist on Twitter.
The Health Affairs denounced media reports that said the hospital delayed treatment of the two injured men who taken to the hospital on the back of a truck. “The emergency section of the hospital is monitored by camera,” it said in a statement.
The two injured were brought to the hospital at 3:55 p.m. and a doctor went to the truck itself to check their condition.
They were later shifted to the hospital on a stretcher. “A team of doctors and nurses took care of the two at the emergency section,” the department said.
The two men were given first-aid immediately and their injuries were dressed. They also underwent a medical checkup and X-rays were taken.
Doctors found fractures in the thigh bones of both men. They were admitted to the orthopedic ward of the hospital and their condition was stable, the Health Affairs explained.
It also pointed out that the father of the two young men had praised the hospital for the good care given to them by the hospital staff.
“They have received medical help in a record time,” the father said and thanked the medical team that treated his sons.
Dr. Mohammed Bin Ali Al-Habdan, director general of health in the region, contacted the father to get reassured about his sons’ health after receiving treatment.
