JEDDAH — Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Alumni Jeddah held a reception in honor of visiting senior Aligarian and ex Indian Member of Parliament Waseem Ahmed on the birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of the esteemed institution.



The alumni, also called Aligs, remembered the great educationist Sir Syed Ahmed’s contributions and reaffirmed their commitment to spread his mission.



Ahmed recounted his days at Aligarh and was nostalgic about the institution’s efforts in empowering the Muslims. He reminded all about the efforts made for the minority character of AMU, while highlighting the achievements of Sir Syed. He advised Aligs to follow traditions of the institution, the path of academic excellence and work for minority character for AMU.



Farzan Rizvi, president AMUA, urged Aligs to keep spreading the message of Sir Syed and highlighted the contribution of Ahmed as a student leader and as an Indian politician.



Aqeel Jamil, secretary of AMUA, welcomed the gathering and urged all to spread Sir Syed’s mission by following policy of each one teach one.



A visiting Alig from Chicago, Shahid Siddiqui also spoke on the occasion. He urged Aligs in Jeddah to help in opening schools in India for needy Muslim children on the pattern followed by Aligs in the US.



Azizur Rab, vice president AMUA, delivered the vote of thanks along with a Dua for AMU and Aligs. He informed that Sir Syed Day would be celebrated in Jeddah on Nov. 21. A newsletter of AMUA Jeddah activities is to be released on Nov. 1 and the directory is to be updated, he added. He urged Aligs to support the group in these matters.



A memento was presented to Ahmed by senior Alig Imtiaz Ahmed and Nooruddin Khan and a bouquet was presented to Mrs. Farha Waseem.



The program concluded with the usual rendition of AMU Tarana, while the program was hosted by Jamil.
