JEDDAH — Batterjee Medical College (BMC) for Science and Technology is working with Jeddah Health Affairs and the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) to raise public awareness of the importance of leading healthy lifestyles in order to avoid chronic diseases.

The campaign encourages people to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and save a third of their stomach for food, another third for drink, and to keep the final third free.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “No human ever filled a container more evil than his belly. “The few morsels needed to support his being shall suffice the son of Adam.

“But if there is no recourse then one third for his food, one third for his drink and one third for his breath.”

Organizers of the campaign, held at JCCI premises, said this teaching could help people avoid numerous chronic diseases.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Tayeb, BMC’s director of student affairs, said the college participated in the workshops and the exhibition that accompanied the campaign.

He added that medicine and nursing students were responsible for running a diabetes awareness corner in which they measured visitors' blood sugar and body mass index.

Brochures were distributed among visitors, while students answered questions and queries. Al-Tayeb added that BMC was the only academic institution that participated in this campaign.

Dr. Hassan Shaibah, BMC dean, stated his institution has always been keen on participating in such events and awareness campaigns.

“Such events spread the spirit of cooperation among students and increase their contribution toward community service,” Dr. Shaibah added.
