JEDDAH — Mayor of Jeddah Hani Aburas inaugurated on Wednesday a central slaughterhouse in the eastern part of the city.
The project, covering an area of 40,000 sq. meters, was established in cooperation with an Australian company.
Aburas said the abattoir was built according to international standards and would have a capacity to slaughter 5,000 sheep and 500 camels and cows a day.
The project has two sections. The first section houses the latest automated machines to slaughter, stamp and cut meat. The section also has facilities to clean and sterilize the meat as well as butchers’ clothing.
The second section, spread over an area of 1,000 sq. meters, is reserved for processing waste materials from the slaughterhouse.
The floor is covered with anti-bacterial material, the mayor said, adding that the roof has pipes that spray water mixed with antiseptics to refresh the air.
The facility has several stockades with 168 of them reserved for selling animals, in addition to dozens of waiting areas.
All animals will be sold after a veterinary check, the mayor said. The slaughterhouse has 28 big refrigerators, spread on an area of 3,500 square meters, which can preserve meat for up to 40 days against 14 days at the old facility.
There are several stores and a mosque as well as other support services in the area.
Aside from the new centralized abattoir, Jeddah has four regional slaughterhouses distributed across the city.
