JEDDAH — Abdul Aziz Al-Jendi, a Batterjee Medical College (BMC) senior student majoring in Physical Therapy, has conducted a scientific study in which he looked at the numerous medical benefits of using stability balls (also known as exercise balls) instead of chairs in schools.

Al-Jendi visited several schools and explained the importance of sitting properly and maintaining correct posture at all times to prevent spinal cord defects that may occur as a result of prolonged sitting on uncomfortable chairs.

Al-Jendi also explained the role of the stability ball in the prevention of such defects and showed how to use it daily.

"When sitting on the stability ball, all the core muscles work to maintain balance, which in turn strengthens the muscles of the body,” he said.

Al-Jendi reached great findings after replacing ordinary chairs with stability balls in classrooms. Students who took part in the study were more attentive and focused which also improved their academic performance.

Al-Jendi stated that his initiative received positive feedback and gained strong admiration and acceptance from school administrators, teachers and students. He added that the idea is being further studied to be potentially applied on a larger scale in all schools and universities which will build a healthy and strong generation free of spinal defects.

Dr. Hassan Shaibah, BMC dean, praised Al-Jendi and his efforts, stressing that BMC supports its students in all fields of science and creative innovations.

"We will always create the right environment for them to contribute to the renaissance of their nation and to be active participants in community service,” he said.
