This picture of a four-year-old girl, Hudea, broke the internet’s heart. “I was using a telephoto lens, and she thought it was a weapon,” confirmed Osman Sagirli, a Turkish photojournalist who took the picture at a refugee camp in Syria in December.

“I realized she was terrified after I took it, and looked at the picture, because she bit her lips and raised her hands.

Normally kids run away, hide their faces or smile when they see a camera.” Apparently the picture was published by  the Türkiye newspaper, in Turkey during January.

Once Nadia Abu Shaban, a photojournalist based in Gaza tweeted it, the picture went viral on English social media with hundreds and thousands of shares online.

Sagirli said the child had traveled more than a hundred kilometers to a refugee camp near the Turkish border with her mother and two siblings.
