AHSA — The Department of Education celebrated a decrease of illiterate men and women in the province to 13,000 from 24,450 a year ago on Thursday, Al-Watan reported.

The department’s head of adult education Mohammad Al-Tulaihi said when education first entered the governorate 80 years ago, 95 percent of adult citizens were illiterate.

“The adult education department was founded 12 years ago and offered literacy programs to 24,450 illiterate men and women,” said Al-Tulaihi.

Supervisor of the adult education department Abdulaziz Al-Mikhlal said literate women in the area outnumber their male counterparts. He said: “We are trying to focus on men in our future programs.

“We are registered under the Ministry of Education’s online platform ‘Nour’. “Applicants may apply to our annual programs through Nour. “At the end of our programs we offer a certificate of accomplishment.” — SG
