JEDDAH — During the past two weeks, Jeddah Municipality confiscated and destroyed more than 214 ton of foodstuffs. The food items became contaminated due to unhygienic storage.
The municipality regularly makes inspection tours of food shops to ensure that they are abiding by the rules of hygiene and cleanliness.
Nasser Al-Muteb, deputy secretary general for the branch municipalities, said the 14 branch municipalities all over Jeddah participated in the raids.
He also said a number of other government departments participated in the inspection tours. They were the security patrols, the labor office, the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) and the Civil Defense.
He said the foodstuffs which were destroyed consisted of meat, flour, cooking oil, dates and various other food items.
The municipality asked the citizens and expatriates to inform it about any civic violations 24/7 via the free-toll-telephone 940.
It also asked them to use the GPS application and the social media sites to inform the municipality of any serious violations.
