JEDDAH — Al-Yamamah held on grimly to scotch the challenge from Pinehill and gain a thrilling 72-70 victory in the fifth week of the SAGCO Cup Basketball Tournament at SAGCO court in Industrial Area here.

National Guard defeated Wintek 94-66. Former champion National Guard was in for a shock in the middle of the second half with a deficit of 21 points, as Wintek’s Conrad Diez led all the scorers and its diminutive rookie ball handler Josemarie Calawid was everywhere on the court displaying superb basketball.

But when Wintek’s first five looked tired and replaced with the substitutes, National Guard bounced back with a vengeance through its forwards, former MVP Manalili (18) and B. Manalan (20), who was awarded the best player. It changed the tempo of the game and the fourth quarter was completely dominated by National Guard, which eventually won at 94-66.
