RIYADH — The directorate general of traffic has made eyesight test a condition for the renewal of the driving license if it is for five or 10 years.
Directorate's spokesman, Lt. Col. Tariq Al-Rubaian said in the olden times the vision examination was a must only for the issuance of a new driving license.
"Now every citizen or expatriate wishing to be issued with a new driving license or hoping to renew his old one will have to undergo a vision test," he said.
Rubaian said the new system was approved about three months ago.
The spokesman, on the other hand, said the directorate has not yet started using the Wasil service to deliver the driving licenses.
"This service is so far being used to deliver the car registration cards (Istimarah) but arrangements for the delivery of the driving licenses are currently being mooted," he said.
While renewing the driving licenses the rules did not include any health examination. The driver would only have to deposit the renewal fees at any local bank and he would get his license at the nearest traffic department.
To obtain a new driving license now, the applicant will have to study for a week at the Driving Learning Center, sit for the exam of the traffic signs, have a field test and a medical examination including sight and hearing.
