BARCELONA — Two-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has extended his contract with Repsol Honda for two years, the team announced Thursday.
The extension follows that of Spanish teammate Dani Pedrosa, who also extended his contract until the end of the 2018 season.
Marquez, 23, world champion in 125cc (2010) and Moto2 (2012) won the MotoGP title in his first season in 2013 and defended it the following year.
He finished third last season after suffering an injury lay off.
"I am very happy to announce my renewal with HRC," said Marquez ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix at his hometown track in Barcelona where a win would put him back atop the world championship standings.
"I had always dreamt about being part of the Repsol Honda Team, and thanks to Honda, the dream came true a year and a half ago.
"Everything happened very quickly last season, and I would have never imagined that I could achieve what we did.
"Becoming World Champion during my first season was another dream turned into reality. It is a great honor to be a part of the Honda family and I'm glad to remain with this special group of people for another two seasons."
After six rounds in the 2016 season, Marquez, who has 52 wins in all categories, is second in the standings 10 points behind fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo of Yahama.
