A panoramic view of the newly expanded Jeddah-Makkah Expressway with five lanes in each direction. The 100-km highway has been divided by a Jersey barrier, which replaced an old iron fence. The Ministry of Transport completed the work in the holy month of Ramadan, spending a total of SR90 million to enhance road safety and facilitate the smooth flow of traffic. Several new bridges have been constructed across the valleys and a number of huge overhead signboards installed to give directions. The facelift with the addition of new lanes in each direction is to keep pace with the expected huge increase in the number of Haj and Umrah pilgrims as envisaged in the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 reform plan.
