ABHA — A man has had his sister-in-law registered as his wife on his family identification after a mistake by an employee at the Civil Status office.
Ali Al-Amry said the incident happened three years ago when he went to get a family ID card issued at the Civil Status office in Bisha.
“I received my card and was surprised to find out that my sister-in-law was registered as my wife. I gave the employee all the paperwork and my documents were all complete. I don’t know where they got my sister-in-law’s information and how did they linked it to me,” Al-Amry said, adding that there was nothing in his documentation, which referred to his sister-in-law.
“I went back to the employee and asked him to correct the mistake. He was embarrassed and abashed and he corrected the mistake by registering my sister-in-law as a divorcee. My sister-in-law is unmarried and an orphaned maiden. Such a mistake has harmed the entire family,” Al-Amry said.
He said his sister-in-law was dependent on social insurance and that it was stopped for three years because of the employee’s mistake.
“The incident has caused me great trouble with my in-laws and wife. I have the corrected family ID card but my sister-in-law is still registered as a divorcee and is not granted her rightful social insurance. Now my sister-in-law is unmarried in some records while divorced in others.”
He pleaded for help to resolve the issue and correct a situation that he had nothing to do with.
Civil Status spokesman Mohammad Al-Jasser said the woman, Aisha Al-Khathami, was registered as married in place of her sister, Ghaitha, due to a clerical error. “The Civil Status has corrected the mishap and Aisha Al-Kathami is now registered in our system as unmarried,” Al-Jasser said.
