JEDDAH — The database of Careem Go’s Saudi users was not hacked, the company issued an official statement on its Twitter account on Wednesday in reply to informal news being circulated on social media claiming the car service website was cyber attacked.

Saudis on social media reported that the company’s website was hacked by an outsider and that users with saved credit card information should be careful of potential theft and to change their passwords and usernames.

However, Careem’s private site for registering drivers, dubbed “captains”, was breached by an unofficial user, the official press release stated. The company said it immediately halted the portal to investigate.

The private website for Careem Go captains is independent from the public website where drivers can register for training.

The company further assured users that its system is protected by “independent and high security standards” and that it has security measures to protect private information, including coding and using advanced security apparatuses.

In response to one user on Twitter who claimed his Visa card was wrongly charged on the car service app, Careem’s customer care replied it will investigate his case.
