NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia has said that Palestinians, and people worldwide, have the right to support the right to self-determination.
Addressing the United Nations’ Special Political and Decolonization Committee meeting, Manal Radwan, first secretary at Saudi Arabia’s mission at the UN, said that members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) reaffirm their support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
She also call for a timeline ending Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
On the issue of Western Sahara, Saudi Arabia confirmed GCC support for Morocco’s autonomous region of the Sahara, and supports the position of Morocco.
In 2006 the Moroccan Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) proposed a plan for the autonomy of Western Sahara and made visits to a number of countries to explain and gather support for their proposal.
The Gulf Cooperation Council rejected any attempt to undermine the supreme interests of Morocco and its sovereignty.
“We express our rejection of any attempt to undermine the supreme interests of the brotherly Kingdom of Morocco, or its sovereignty”, said Manal Radwan.
The GCC delegations expressed their satisfaction with the efforts aimed at reaching a “political and consensual” solution to the Sahara issue within the framework of relevant Security Council resolutions, including the 2285 resolution, and welcomed the efforts of the UN Special Envoy, Christopher Ross.
In this regard, they stressed the importance of continuing the commitment of all parties to “work seriously to contribute positively to the success of this important political process”.
