JEDDAH — The executive courts received 128 judicial verdicts issued from foreign countries on Saudi citizens and residents during the past year, Al-Watan reported.
Lawyer Salih Al-Ghamdi said the executive courts review the judicial verdicts from foreign countries against Saudi citizens and residents to ensure that they comply with Islamic Shariah laws.
“If the courts find a verdict that goes against Islamic law, the court refrains from executing the verdict. Courts don’t execute verdicts relating to gambling interests. Most of these verdicts are monetary demands. The courts received monetary demands totaling up to more than SR4 billion,” said Al-Ghamdi.
He added the courts in the Kingdom do not get involved with real estate cases outside the Kingdom.
“Non-Saudis residing in the Kingdom and on trial in a foreign land stay in the Kingdom until the final verdict has been issued. The courts in the Kingdom accept personal status cases if they were handled by specialized courts,” said Al-Ghamdi.
Former judge Mohammad Al-Jathlani said the executive courts in the Kingdom have a specified procedure on how to deal with verdicts issued against Saudis abroad.
“The country issuing the verdict must have a system in place for cases related to residents of that country. The Kingdom will appoint a judge to review the verdicts issued and ensure that all documents are validated. The Kingdom will only review final verdicts issued by judicial authorities in the foreign land,” said Al-Jathlani.
He added the verdicts must also respect Shariah law as the Kingdom does not accept cases of usury interests.
