CAIRO — The Egyptian banking sector has been in mourning over past weeks after the CEO of Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank in Cairo, Nevine Loutfy, was killed in her house during a robbery.

The killer, a disgruntled former security guard at Loutfy’s compound who had been fired only months ago, was arrested only a few hours later.

The criminal broke into to Loutfy’s house at midnight, but when Loutfy tried to resist and call security, he killed her and fled the scene with a large amount of money and her car keys.

Loutfy was considered a pioneer in Egypt’s banking sector and was the first female head of an Islamic bank.

She had more than three decades of banking experience, and had worked across both corporate and retail sectors, with extensive international experience gained in the US, Europe and emerging markets.

Her primary areas of expertise were local corporate and small to medium sized business management, in addition to credit risk and capital management.

She came to ADIB Egypt from Citigroup’s EMEA Commercial Bank in London where she held the position of Chief Operating Officer, Managing Director and Business Senior Credit Officer.

She began her banking career with Citibank in 1976 when she joined the Cairo office as a Financial Analyst.

She held a BA Economics from the American University in Cairo.
