JEDDAH – A new vegetable and fruit market is coming up along Jeddah's King Abdullah Street, covering an area of a million square meters, several times bigger than the existing one in Safa district.
The Jeddah mayoralty has signed the deal with a new contracting company to complete the project within two years after a delay of 15 years, Al-Watan Arabic daily reported. The paper did not disclose the amount for which the contract was awarded to the new company. The previous contract was signed on May 13, 2002 for SR377 million.
The mayoralty has withdrawn the project from the previous contractor and has removed all obstacles facing its implementation including damages caused by Jeddah deluge. “The market will be shifted from Safa to the new location east of Haramain Expressway along King Abdullah Street,” a mayoralty official told the Arabic daily.
Of the total available land, 400,000 sq. meters will be allocated for buildings while the remaining area for support services.
The agreement with mayoralty includes an annual rent of SR4 million. The market will have six regions including three for receiving trucks carrying fruit and vegetables and 800 stalls.
About 600,000 sq. meters of the complex would be allocated for cold-storage warehouses. The project includes a large parking area for customers.
The municipality has instructed the new contractor to complete the project within two years.
