JEDDAH – With a purpose to instill sportsman spirit and to enhance the physical skills among its students, Mahd Al-Uloom International School (MIS) organized its 8th annual sports meet, titled MIS Atletico ’16 at Xtep outdoor stadium here recently.

The stadium posed a picturesque sight as jubilant children assembled in their respective house arenas in complete sports attire. The synchronized marching of the students from Emerald, Ruby, Topaz and Sapphire houses was a sight worth seeing.

The function commenced with an invocation from the Holy Qur’an by Master Sayed of Class VI. Dr. Firoz Mulla, the principal of the school, accorded a warm welcome to the honored guests and the students.

Yahya Khaleel Noorani, operations manager, presided over the function and exhorted the children to carry forward the MIS tradition of excellence with pride. The chief guest, Muhammed Iqbal, chairman of the Managing Committee, International Indian School Jeddah, inaugurated the event by lighting the torch. He was given the guard of honor by the school pupil leader and the scout team.

He commended the efforts of MIS in providing opportunities to students to showcase their talents. He also emphasized the importance of sports at an early age and its effects on life. “The most important thing is not winning, but taking part in competition,” Iqbal said addressing the students.

Abdu Raheem and Abdu Rabb, directors of the school, honored the chief guest by presenting a memento.

Muhammed Abdul Haneefa administered the oath of sportsmanship. Among others present on the occasion were: School Superintendent Mansoor Ali, Academic Executive Officer Marakkar, Administrator Abdullah, Ashraf and Muahmmed Ali. Mansoor CK proposed the vote of thanks and briefed the students about the importance of sports.

The bevy of the events for the day included: 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m races alongside relays, high jump and long jump. Apart from athletics, sports such as tug of war, Kabadi and fun filled items potato gathering, balloon bursting, and sack race were also conducted.

All drew hearty applause from the crowds, a fitting appreciation for weeks of hard work. The students participated with great excitement in track and field events.

Emerald House was declared winner, while Ruby House was the runner-up. The medals and trophies were awarded among the winners at a glittering function by distinguished guests. The event ended with national anthems.
