THE Red Sea Malls Company—for the sixth year in a row—participated in the global Earth Hour movement, which this year carried the slogan: “Shine a Light on Climate Change – Switch off the lights, and switch on your social power.” In order to make a greater impact this year, The Red Sea Malls Company powered down the lights of the Mall, the Elaf Hotel, and the main building of SEDCO Holding Group for an hour, reducing its electrical power consumption by 12,364 kilowatts/hour.
Mohamed Iqbal Alawi, CEO of Red Sea Markets Company Ltd., owning and operating the Red Sea Mall, expressed his appreciation for the commitment shown to the planet and its people as well as his hopes that it will continue long past Earth Day. He pointed out that humanity’s relation to the environment necessitates that we work for the mutual benefit of both as one entity.
Earth Hour, the world›s largest environmental event, unites more than 7,000 cities, as people around the globe turn off their non-essential lights for an hour, in solidarity with each other in the face of climate change, and reflecting the powerful impact of united action.
Earth Hour originated in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and institutions switched off their lights for an hour, taking a firm stand against climate change. One year later, Earth Hour has become a global event and a huge environmental movement with the support of more than 50 million people in 35 countries around the world. — SG
