JEDDAH — To serve humanity is to serve God said Sheikh Mohammed Luqman, a veteran social worker and a well-known figure in the Memon community, during his address at function organized by Memon Welfare Society (MWS) on the occasion of World Memon Day at Star restaurant recently.

Luqman further said, “The Memon community is known in the world for social and charity work. They know the social service is a duty from birth to death and social service is a way of giving back to society a tiny portion of what one has taken from it.”

He added, “The world is full of poverty, disease and suffering. There are opportunities for social services everywhere. There are many inspiring examples of social and humanitarian services in the Memon community that spawned personalities like Abdul Sattar Edhi, Sir Adamjee, etc.”

He praised the social services, educational and welfare activities of MWS in Saudi Arabia.

Chief guest patron Iqbal Advani also stressed on importance of social services. He said the way the Memon community are serving generously May Allah accept their charity works.

The function was attended by Yousuf Al-Memoni, father of a Saudi women pilot, Haji Ahmed Chapra prominent personality in the business circles and large number of Memon community members from different walks of life.

Earlier the function began with the recitation of few verses from the Holy Qur’an and its translation by Qari Mohammad Asif. Naat was presented by Haji Irfan Ahmed Kolsawala.

Kolsawala, president MWS, delivered welcome address. He briefly gave an introduction of MWS.

Tayyab Moosani, general secretary MWS, said the “World Memon Day” is celebrated as symbol of unity, love, fraternity and brotherhood. He highlighted the social and welfare services of Memon community in Saudi Arabia. He also read out a poem on Memon day written by poet Ather Nafees Abbasi.

Speaker Mohammed Amanatullah, Syed Shehabuddin, Qamer Alam Qasmi and Syed Ehsan ul Haq paid rich tributes to achievements of Memon personalities in Pakistan.

Mementoes were given to Abdul Rehman Merchant, Mohammed Habibullah, Yousuf Al-Memoni, Ahmed Chapra and others.

MWS member Haji Younus Habib gave vote of thanks.
