NEW YORK — Kevin Pillar hit a home run with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 to extend their winning streak to five games.
Pillar hit his fifth homer of the season against Edwin Diaz (1-2). Ryan Tepera (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings for the win as the Jays completed a four-game sweep.
Justin Smoak lined his seventh homer of the season in the sixth to elevate Toronto into a 2-1 lead. Jarrod Dyson tied the score when he led off the top of the seventh against Dominic Leone with his first homer of the season.
Yankees 11, Astros 6 (Game 1)
Chase Headley hit a tiebreaking, bases-clearing triple with two outs in the seventh inning, lifting New York to a victory over Houston in the opener of a doubleheader. The Yankees quickly recovered from Adam Warren (1-0) allowing three runs in the top of the seventh by rallying against Will Harris (1-1) and Chris Devenski.
Astros 10, Yankees 7 (Game 2)
Alex Bregman hit his first career grand slam, and Houston belted four home runs off Masahiro Tanaka before holding on for a victory over New York to earn a split of a doubleheader.
Houston rocked Tanaka (5-2) shortly after former Yankees captain Derek Jeter had his No. 2 retired. George Springer homered in each of his first two at-bats, and Josh Reddick hit a solo home run.
Phillies 4, Nationals 3 (Game 1)
Ty Kelly drove in the go-ahead run in a three-run ninth inning as Philadelphia rallied to beat Washington in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Shawn Kelley started the ninth and gave up a homer to Aaron Altherr (2-for-3) to make it 3-2. Maikel Franco doubled with one out and Cameron Rupp, who had two hits, tied the score with an RBI double. Koda Glover then gave up the RBI hit to Kelly.
Nationals 6, Phillies 5 (Game 2)
Michael A Taylor hit a two-run homer off the left field foul pole in the eighth inning, and Washington beat Philadelphia to gain a split of a day-night doubleheader. Anthony Rendon walked with one out in the eighth inning, and Taylor then went deep off reliever Pat Neshek (0-1) for his second homer of the year.
Cardinals 5, Cubs 0
Adam Wainwright fired seven shutout innings as St. Louis beat Chicago for its eighth win in its last nine games and handed the Cubs their seventh loss in nine games.
Yadier Molina offered Wainwright (3-3) all the support he needed with two homers, the first a two-run shot in the bottom of the second off Jake Arrieta (4-3). The Cardinals upped their lead to 4-0 in the third when Matt Carpenter launched his eighth homer of the season.
Marlins 3, Braves 1
Tyler Moore slugged a three-run, pinch-hit homer in the seventh inning, helping Miami snap a season-worst five-game losing streak with a win over Atlanta. Moore, who went deep against R.A. Dickey (3-3), had not hit a major league homer since Sept. 20, 2015.
Atlanta opened the scoring in the fifth. Ender Inciarte led off with a single, advanced to second when Adonis Garcia was hit by a pitch and scored when Nick Markakis laced a two-out opposite-field single.
Indians 8, Twins 3
Cleveland belted four home runs — two by Jason Kipnis — and Trevor Bauer pitched six strong innings at Progressive Field to halt the Indians' three-game losing streak and end Minnesota's four-game winning streak. Kipnis had four RBIs and four hits. Carlos Santana moved from the leadoff spot to No. 5 and also homered. Lonnie Chisenhall hit No. 8 for the first time this season and he also homered.
Rangers 6, Athletics 4
Texas extended its season-high winning streak to six by coming back for the fifth consecutive game to Oakland at Globe Life Park. Texas pulled ahead in the seventh inning with three consecutive two-out hits to overcome a 4-2 deficit.
Oakland had to feel good about its chances after belting three homers against A.J. Griffin. Trevor Plouffe and Adam Rosales hit solo shots in the second and fifth innings, respectively, to tie it. Matt Joyce's two-run blast, also in the fifth, put Oakland up 4-2.
White Sox 9, Padres 3
A day after winning in walk-off fashion, Chicago used an eight-run eighth inning to erase a late deficit and beat San Diego. Pinch hitter Melky Cabrera's broken-bat, two-run single past diving Padres first baseman Wil Myers gave Chicago a 4-3 lead. But that hardly was the end of it as the White Sox awoke a once-scuffling attack behind savvy baserunning and timely hitting.
The outburst included Todd Frazier scoring from third base on a fielder's choice after the Padres had turned their backs upon recording an out on a popped-up bunt to first base. Leury Garcia added a two-run double before Yolmer Sanchez (three hits) capped the scoring on an RBI single one pitch later.
Royals 9, Orioles 8
Mike Moustakas, Jorge Soler and Drew Butera homered as Kansas City completed a three-game sweep of Baltimore. Moustakas drove in four runs, including three with a fourth-inning homer. Soler's sixth-inning blast went an estimated 462 feet, the Royals' longest of the year. Butera had three hits and scored three runs and drove in two.
The Royals sent 11 men to the plate in a five-run fourth to chase Kevin Gausman. Moustakas drilled a 3-1 pitch into the right-field bullpen with two runners on base. Butera and Alcides Escobar stroked run-producing singles for the first two runs.
Brewers 11, Mets 9
Manny Pina hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning as Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of New York. The Brewers trailed 7-1 after five innings but started chipping away at the deficit in the sixth with a two-run homer from Keon Broxton and a two-run shot in the seventh from Jonathan Villar.
In the eighth, Hernan Perez singled to drive in two runs. After Addison Reed (0-2) struck out Jesus Aguilar, Pina connected for his second homer of the year, putting Milwaukee on top for the first time all day.
Rays 11, Red Sox 2
Steven Souza Jr slugged a three-run homer to cap a seven-run Tampa Bay ninth inning, and Matt Andriese held Boston to two runs at Fenway Park. Andriese (3-1) struck out five and allowed four hits and four walks in five innings as Tampa Bay won the rubber match of its three-game series in Boston.
Angels 4, Tigers 1
Rookie Alex Meyer had the best start of his career, allowing Detroit three hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out seven as Los Angeles took the series finale at Angel Stadium. Meyer (2-1) allowed hits to the first two Tigers for an early run, then faced 19 Detroit batters without a hit until Victor Martinez doubled with one out in the seventh. It was the longest start of his career and the seven strikeouts tied a career high set in his previous start in a win at Oakland.
Rockies 9, Dodgers 6
Pat Valaika hit two home runs and drove in a career-high four runs, and Nolan Arenado added a two-run homer, helping Colorado beat Los Angeles to gain a split of a four-game series.
After the Dodgers scored twice in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game, Valaika unloaded his second two-run homer in the bottom of the inning. The multi-homer game was the first of Valaika's career. Arenado, who also drove in a run in Colorado's three-run first, had a season-high-tying three RBIs.
Giants 8, Reds 3
San Francisco beat Cincinnati for its first three-game win streak of the season and gave starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija a win. Samardzija was 0-5 in his previous seven starts. He got support early as the Giants scored four quick runs off Cincinnati starter Tim Adleman (2-2), who left after an inning with a sore neck, and three in the second off Barrett Astin.
Pirates 6, Diamondbacks 4 (10 innings)
Rookie Jose Osuna hit a two-run homer to break a tie in the 10th inning, and Andrew McCutchen and Josh Bell also homered in Pittsburgh's win over Arizona. Gift Ngoepe waked with two outs in the 10th against Tom Wilhelmsen (0-1) before Osuna hit a 3-1 pitch over the fence in center. — Reuters
