Lahore High Court in a recent verdict has ordered the federal government to go ahead with the construction of Kalabagh dam. Mr. Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that the federal government is bound by the decisions of the Joint Benefit Council according to article 154 of the constitution.

Our agricultural land and many of our villages have been destroyed by floods in the past. The former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani stated that if the Kalabagh dam had been constructed, there would have been no large scale flood damage. But some of our leaders and government officials are making the construction of the dam a political issue.

However, Kalabagh Dam is necessary for our agriculture and industry. It is absolutely wrong and a false concept that if the dam is constructed then Sindh and KPK will be deprived of water and electricity. It is the responsibility of the federal and provincial governments to see to it that the dam is constructed as quickly as possible.
