MAKKAH — King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense, joined Saudi scholars and people in mourning the death of Sheikh Muhammad Bin Abdullah Al-Subail, former head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.



The renowned Islamic scholar, imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque died at the National Guard Hospital, Jeddah, on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 92.



Sheikh Subail’s body was buried at Makkah’s Al-Adel graveyard after funeral prayers were offered at the Grand Mosque on Tuesday.



King Abdullah and Prince Salman expressed their condolences on the death of Sheikh Subail, and prayed to Allah Almighty to shower on him mercy and accommodate him in His paradise.



The condolences were conveyed to his family members by Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal during a visit to the scholar’s house on Wednesday.



Prince Khaled was received by Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Haram Presidency, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Khozaim, deputy head of the presidency, and sons of Sheikh Subail.



The emir noted that Sheikh Subail dedicated his life in the service of his religion, nation and the king.



He said: “The great scholar’s contributions in the propagation to the path of Allah and His messenger were remarkable.”



The sons of Sheikh Subail thanked the King and the Crown Prince for their condolences and noble feelings toward their father.



Born in Bokairiya in Al-Qassim region, Sheikh Subail served as imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque for more than four decades after being appointed to the post in 1385H.



In the same year, he was named as head of teachers at the religious supervision presidency at the holy mosque. He served as head of the Haram Presidency for nine years from 1411 to 1420.



He was also chairman of the Haram Landmarks Committee and member of the Senior Scholars’ Commission and the Islamic Fiqh Academy, an affiliate of the Muslim World League. Sheikh Subail was the author of several Islamic books.
