NEW YORK — Two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay finally got some run support from his Philadelphia teammates and won for the first time in more than a month Thursday as the Phillies eked an 8-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The host Cubs made for a tense ending as they scored four runs in the ninth inning and had the tying run on base after Halladay had left the game.

“It got a little testy, didn’t it?” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told reporters after the win.

Halladay (4-3) had performed well in his last two outings but the Phillies had failed to back him up with the runs needed for a win.

This time Philadelphia pounded out 14 total hits and scored four runs in the first two innings to top the .500 mark with their fifth consecutive win.

Giants 7, Cardinals 5: San Francisco’s Brandon Crawford hit a two-run single as the Giants capitalized on shoddy fielding by St. Louis and beat the Cardinals 7-5 Thursday. St. Louis made three errors in a game for the second time this week. Three of the five runs scored off Adam Wainwright (2-5) were unearned.

Giants starter Matt Cain (3-2) got some overdue run support to take the win. Since his first season in the majors in 2006, he has received a major league-low 3.89 runs of support per game.

Mets 9, Reds 4: In New York, David Wright lined his second double of the game to break the tie in the eighth inning and give New York victory over Cincinnati.

Down 4-0, the Mets began their comeback in the middle innings.

Ronny Cedeno’s three-run homer capped a five-run eighth against Logan Ondrusek (3-1), a burst that began with a neatly placed bunt single by backup catcher Rob Johnson with one out.

Wright was up next and sent a one-hopper off the wall in center for a 5-4 lead. Wright raised his majors-leading average to .411.

A trio of Mets relievers held the Reds scoreless ball, with Bobby Parnell (1-0) getting the win.

Diamondbacks 9, Rockies 7: In Denver, Justin Upton hit a two-out, two-run homer off in the ninth inning to give Arizona victory over Colorado in a game that was briefly delayed by a swarm of bees.

Upton sent a fastball from Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt (1-1) over the right field fence for his first homer in two weeks.

Braves 7, Marlins 0: Brandon Beachy pitched a five-hitter for his first career complete game as Atlanta beat Miami.

Pirates 5, Nationals 3: Andrew McCutchen homered twice and James McDonald struck out a career-high 11 while taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning to lead Pittsburgh past Washington.

Dodgers 8, Padres 1: Aaron Harang held his former team to four hits in seven shutout innings and had one of Los Angeles’ 12 hits as the Dodgers beat San Diego to split a two-game series.

Astros 4, Brewers 0: Jed Lowrie hit a two-run homer and J.A. Happ pitched out of trouble for six innings before three relievers completed Houston’s shutout against Milwaukee. — Agencies
