JEDDAH — To mark the World Earth Day, the Association of Jeddah Divers organized a cleanup campaign on Shoaiba beach under the slogan “Protect My Environment, Protect Me.”

The event had the support of Saudi Company for Engineering and Aviation Industry, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabian Airlines.

The campaign focused on preservation and rehabilitation of the Red Sea coral reefs and removing waste dumped in the sea south of Jeddah.

The participants broke up into 10 teams, each with 10 divers, and spread out on a vast area of the beach. They got themselves busy retrieving garbage strewn on the shores and buried in the seabed with the aim of making the place suitable for scuba diving, a fun sport that has become popular among young people.

Saudi Free Diving Champion Capt. Ahmed Abu Ahmed took part in the campaign. Expressing his joy in participating in the event, Ahmed said: “Every individual is responsible for the protection of the environment, especially the marine environment. By doing so, people can practice this fun sport safely.”
