Hotel Majestic Barriere Cannes: A leading palace for 80 years

Since its creation in 1926, the Majestic Barrière has constantly evovlved.

Lauched by Henri Ruhl and soon perpetuated by the Barrière family, its turbulent history has produced today’s winning combination of tradition, luxury and modernity.

A palace for the 21st century

In 2001, to make a good start on the new millenium, the Majestic Barrière opened a brand new restaurant: Le Fouquet’s Cannes. It is the youngest sister of the illustrious establishment on the Champs Elysées, host to all the celebrities of the 20th century.

Very early on, the Majestic Barrière took on an ambitious challenge: ISO 9001 certification version 2000.

In 2005, hardly a year after taking the initial steps, it became the Riviera’s first palatial hotel, and the third in France, to dare receive the auditors.

A challenge won hands down: the reliability of its quality management system earned it its certification.

Since then, it has been always renewed. With the same brilliance, the hotel accepted another of this decade’s quality-relates challenges: the creation by the French government of “5-star” establishments, a rank obtained on September 29th, 2009.

The Majestic Barrière’s

new extension

The technical and architectural challenges involved in the extension were huge-and were taken up with real enthusiasm.

It took four years and six months to bring to completion what was, between November 2007 and May 2010, the largest private building project on the French Riviera.

The construction of the second wing of the Majestic Barrière will be remembered as a real tour de force in the history of this luxury hotel.

One crucial challenge was the construction of the new wing’s dome, which had to be similar to the one of the initial building.

The visible part of the building, which eventually stood 35 meter above ground level, could begin; 600,000 tons of reinforced concrete later, five trucks weighing 38 tons brought the different sections of the dome to the site in October 2009.

Once assembled, the new dome was the exact replica of its older sibling which crowns the east wing.

Similarly, the façade, decorated with floral friezes, mirrors that of the original wing which was built 80 years earlier.

Majestic Penthouse:

A gem on the Croisette

The Majestic Barrière has embarked on the conquest of space. The top floor of its new wing is home to a 650m2 out-of-this-world apartment: the Majestic penthouse, which also happens to boast its own private terrace perched on top of the hotel, offers its single tenant no less than 150m2 from which to admire Cannes and its glorious bay.

“The penthouse enables us to offer our elite clientele an exclusive and completely private well-being space overlooking the sea with a sun deck and swimming pool,” said Dominique Desseigne, president.

A roof-top-pool

Something that is a source of sheer delight for wealthy holidaymakers. The majestic penthouse is also sublime for its magnificent view; one can admire the Mediterranean, the Lérins Islands and the incomparable spectacle of glowing sunsets over the Estérel Hills — less romantic, but just as appreciable, home cinema with top-notch audiovisual equipment.

Over and beyond its technical arguments, the Majestic arguments, the Majestic Barrière’s most regal suite also convinces because of its special atmosphere, a subtle blend of the seaside spirit and classic French elegance.

The interior decoration is the handiwork of an accomplished exponent of the “French touch”, Pascal Desprez. He has designed a real cocoon giving priority to wood, warm and elegant tones and making the most of the light and the panoramic view offered by the picture windows.

Christian Dior penthouse: “Haute Couture” appointments

The sixth floor of the new wing hosts an outstanding apartment with a surface area of 450m2: the Christian Dior penthouse.

It is the result of an exceptional partnership between the famous Parisian fashion house and Lucien Barrière.

Dior and Barrière decided to invent together a highly original cocoon, combining the inimitable style of Christian Dior with the hotelry expertise of Lucien Barrrière.

The result, mostly dreamt up by Nathalie Ryan, accredited interior decorator of the Parisian fashion house, is striking. The decor, all elegance, harmony and delicacy, plays host to a gem of technology: a home movie system, with a projector and a giant screen three meters long.

The bedrooms also bear the stamp of the “haute couture” with their shades of grey, pullman armchairs, bed-heads in canework and a replica of Monsieur Dior’s desk.

The Christian Dior penthouse thus conveys the refined spirit of the designer whose name it bears. — SG
