Saudi Gazette report

JEDDAH – Newly developed and refurbished seaside resorts in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah are likely to attract over two million tourists and visitors during this summer vacation.

The number of tourists is expected to increase further once the ongoing northern Corniche project’s fourth and fifth phases are completed this October. The SR800 million project covers more than four kilometers of coastal line on the Red Sea.

Jeddah Mayor Dr. Hani Aburas commended the government for its generous support to the seafront tourism projects on the Red Sea. He said the northern Corniche project would be a good addition to the existing tourism facilities in the city.

The Jeddah municipality has given top priority to tourism projects on the Red Sea to enhance the welfare of tourists as well as Saudi and foreign visitors. Aburas said the beautification work on the Corniche would make it more attractive to tourists.

The project’s fourth and fifth phases include services and recreation facilities for all groups of people including children. Facilities include sandy beaches, resting places, children’s games, jogging areas, greeneries and parking places.

The municipality has already implemented the first three phases of the project, which won the Big Project Middle East Award of the year 2012 during a colorful ceremony in Dubai.

The Red Sea tourism project, launched this week by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, would strengthen Jeddah’s position in the tourism world. The project will be implemented by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) in cooperation with the world's largest hotel companies.

The project involved development of exceptional resorts on more than 50 natural islands between the cities of Umluj and Al-Wajh. The project’s site is a few kilometers away from one of the Kingdom's protected reserves and dormant volcanoes.

A few minutes from the main beach, visitors will be able to discover hidden treasures in the Red Sea area and explore the diversity of flora and fauna in the area. Adventure enthusiasts will be able to navigate between dormant volcanoes while diving enthusiasts can explore the abundant coral reefs in the surrounding waters.

The project aims to promote international tourism by opening the Red Sea gate to the world in order to identify its treasures and embark on new adventures that will attract tourists from all parts of the globe.

“The project will be a center for recreation, healthcare and relaxation and an integrated model for a healthy and vital society,” an official statement said.

The foundation for the project will be laid in the third quarter of 2019 and the first phase will be completed in the last quarter of 2022, the statement said. It includes development of an airport, seaport, hotels and luxurious apartments.

The PIF will inject initial investments into this project and open partnerships with leading international companies, which will bring new and direct investments to the Kingdom. Leading global players in the tourism and hospitality sectors will be invited to make use of their expertise and add value to tourists and visitors.
