SUSAN Hockfield, President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), recently hosted at her house a private dinner in order to celebrate the induction of Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, Chairman of ALJ Community Initiatives, as a member of the MIT Charter Society. The MIT Charter Society includes a group of lifetime donors who have extended extraordinary support to MIT.

It was Hockfields's idea to inaugurate this recognition society for MIT's benefactors on the occasion of the Institute's 150th anniversary in April 2011. She acknowledged Jameel and his vision of a better world, his intense focus on the practical steps to get there, as well as the transformational contributions and support to MIT.

Hockfield also honored seven members of the Charter Society, including Jameel, and outlined the story of the Charter Society and then presented. Jameel with a piece of the original MIT dome, the iconic symbol of MIT, as gift.

In 1994, ALJ Company Ltd established the Abdul Latif Jameel/Toyota endowed scholarship fund to honor the company's founder Abdul Latif Jameel. To honor the long-standing relationship between Toyota and the late Abdul Latif Jameel, the students receiving the scholarship are called Jameel/Toyota scholars. — SG
