MANILA — The resurgent Barangay Ginebra Kings overwhelmed the luckless Alaska Aces, 94-80, in a PBA Governors’ Cup road game at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Saturday night.

The defending champions led from start to finish and by as much as 22 points in the third quarter en route to their fourth straight win after starting the conference with a loss. The Aces, on the other hand, continued their free fall, dropping to a 0-6 win-loss mark with their historic 14th straight defeat extending back to the last conference.

Justin Brownlee led Ginebra’s balanced offensive might, blasting away 22 points on top of 10 boards, five assists, and three blocks. Joe Devance was just as hot, finishing with 19 markers on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting, along with three boards, three assists, and three steals.

Then twin towers of Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter were also dominant. Aguilar came off the bench to finish with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks, while Slaughter also had a double-double of 12 points and 13 boards, as well as two blocks in over 35 minutes.

LA Tenorio added 12 points along with six assists, four rebounds, and two steals, while Scottie Thompson nearly had a triple-double of 8 points, 11 boards and 10 assists.

After an unremarkable stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the just concluded Fiba Asia Cup in Lebanon, Calvin Abueva was back to lead Alaska, albeit in a losing effort. He finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Import Buck Henton played listlessly and could only come up with 10 points on a miserable 4-of-16 shooting in almost 43 minutes.

Dondon Hontiveros made a rare start for Alaska but ended up with just three points and three boards in 23 minutes. Hontiveros, a native of Cebu, was feted at halftime, as he announced his retirement after the end of the current conference.

Trailing in double digits for most parts of the game, the Aces made their last stand in the final quarter, cutting Ginebra’s lead to just nine, 87-78, with 2:02 left to play.

But the Kings responded with a 7-2 run capped by an alley-oop Aguilar slam from a Thompson assist with 30 seconds left to seal Ginebra’s victory.

Rice Jr. excels in TNT win

Glen Rice Jr. exploded for 38 points to power the TNT KaTropa Texters to a morale-boosting 110-103 victory over the slumping Phoenix Fuel Masters Friday night.

Rice, the son of a former NBA All-Star player, also tallied nine rebounds and five assists while showing his defensive clout to lift the Texters to their third win in five games.

Import Brandon Brown played one-man army for Phoenix, pouring 49 points on top of 19 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

San Miguel Beer 115, GlobalPort 112

The San Miguel Beermen showed some rust coming off a three-week break but still had enough firepower to beat the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 115-112, for their third win in four games.

Wendell Mickines led the Beermen with 35 points, 14 boards, seven assists, four blocks, and two steals in 44 minutes.

GlobalPort absorbed its third loss in five games. Gilas top gunner Terrence Romeo was back to lead his team with 26 points.

Games Sunday: Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (3-2) vs. Star Hotshots (4-0) and NLEX Road Warriors (5-2) vs. San Miguel Beermen (3-1).
