MANILA — Gilas Pilipinas saved its best game for last, crushing Indonesia, 94-55, in the gold-medal match of the 29th Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball at the jam-packed MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur Saturday night.
The blowout win was the Philippines’ 12th straight and 17th overall SEA Games basketball championship as the Filipinos reasserted their reputation as the biggest basketball power in their region. The 39-point victory was the second largest Gilas scored among the five nations it defeated in the biennial sports event. Gilas scored its biggest winning margin of 95 points against Myanmar, which it defeated, 129-34, in its second game. Gilas began the regional competition with a victory over Thailand, 81-74. Thailand eventually won the bronze medal Saturday after beating Singapore, 65-55.
Gilas also defeated Malaysia, 98-66, and then Singapore, 68-60, in the semifinals.
Mike Tolomia of the Meralco Bolts came off the bench to lead Gilas with 20 points, including five three-pointers. He drained three of those triples in the second quarter when the Filipinos began pulling away, leading 45-27 at halftime.
Kobe Paras added 14 points, including a series of highlight-reel slams in the final period to the delight of the huge Filipino crowd who filled the stadium and those who watched the game over a giant television screen outside the venue.
Raymar Jose tallied 12 points while Fil-German Christian Standhardinger chipped in 11 markers on top of five rebounds.
