MANILA — The Barangay Ginebra Kings spoiled the grand slam aspirations of sister team San Miguel Beer with a huge 104-84 victory Wednesday night as they moved on to advance to the semifinals of the PBA Governors Cup.

Coming from a lopsided loss to TNT in their final elimination round game, the third-seeded defending champion Kings vented their fury on the stunned Beermen who got buried in an avalanche of baskets from the Kings in the closing minutes to the delight of the mostly pro-Ginebra fans at the jampacked Mall of Asia Arena.

Ginebra now awaits the winner of the sudden death match between TNT and Rain or Shine Friday.

Justin Brownlee was on fire all game long, exploding for 37 points along with 12 rebounds and four blocks with less than two minutes of rest. The do-it-all import scored 16 of his points in the fourth quarter when the Kings broke the game wide open.

Brownlee got plenty of support from Ginebra’s triple towers—Joe Devance, Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar. Devance scored 17 points, including four three-pointers, while Slaughter and Aguilar added 13 points apiece.

Ginebra’s guards also outclassed their SMB counterparts with Sol Mercado breaking out of a scoring slump, scoring nine points on three triples in the fourth period. LA Tenorio added eight markers, 10 assists, and two steals while Scottie Thompson had seven points, 13 boards and four assists. A Thompson three-pointer gave Ginebra its biggest lead at 102-72 in the game’s closing minutes.

Terrence Watson led SMB with 30 points. June Mar Fajardo added 19 markers, 22 boards, and five blocks. Marcio Lassiter chipped in 13. However, SMB’s other shooters—Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, and Chris Ross—all had off nights.

Rain or Shine 106, TNT 102

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters stamped their mastery over the second-seeded TNT KaTropa Texters with a 106-102 victory in the quarterfinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The victory enabled the E-Painters to erase the Texters’ twice-to-beat advantage and force a decider on Friday for the right to advance to the semifinals.

It marked the second time ROS defeated TNT this conference. The E-Painters beat the Texters in their elimination round game on Aug. 20 with a whopping 32-point margin, 105-73.

The top-seeded Meralco Bolts, TNT’s sister team, also lost their playoff match against eight-seeded Blackwater on Tuesday, marking the first time that the top two seeds were forced to play sudden death matches since the 2001 All-Filipino Cup.

Just like in their previous meeting, the E-Painters stunned the Painters with their long-range guns, propelling them to take a 20-point fourth-quarter lead. ROS hit 16 three-pointers, with J’Nathan Bullock accounting for seven of them. The ROS import finished with a team-high 31 points along with 15 rebounds in over 43 minutes of action.

Gabe Norwood also caught fire from long distance, burying four three-pointers to finish with 15 markers along with nine caroms, six assists, two steals, and one block in 33 minutes.

Raymond Almazan added 13 points, eight boards and two blocks, while Maverick Ahanmisi and Don Trollano chipped in 10 apiece.

Kelly Williams and Jayson Castro led the Texters with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Williams also had 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and just one turnover in almost 39 minutes of play.

Glen Rice Jr. was limited by the pesky ROS defense to just 19 points on a subpar 8-of-28 shooting from the field. Anthony Semerad also had 19 points while Troy Rosario chipped in 10 markers and 16 rebounds.

Game Thursday: (Knockout quarterfinal) Meralco Bolts vs. Blackwater Elite.
