JEDDAH — Algerian Consul General Abdelkader Kacimi El-Hassani paid rich tributes to the Algerian martyrs for their great sacrifices to liberate the country from its colonial masters.

El-Hassani was speaking at a reception held on Tuesday at Jeddah Crowne Plaza to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the Algerian revolution.

"We are pleased to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the Glorious Revolution of November from the land of the Two Holy Mosques. Saudi Arabia was one of the first supporters of the revolution. The Saudi support to the Algerian revolution continued until the final victory and until we regained liberty and independence. It was a lofty stance that will never be forgotten and that is deeply rooted in the memory of all Algerian people," El-Hassani said

"Despite the agony of liberation struggle and the heinous national tragedy that Algerians have endured, yet that tormenting stage has been marked by the revival of values conferred by November Revolution, values that have helped Algerians to overcome the barbaric terrorism. Thank God, we are blessed by the Islamic principles that guided us through our suffering and reach national reconciliation," he added.

He said the Algerian state also devoted considerable efforts under the leadership of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, which enabled Algeria to regain its prosperity, stability and security.

"The relations between Algeria and Saudi Arabia have always been characterized by brotherhood, friendship, respect and mutual appreciation, where bilateral cooperation has improved significantly under the wise leadership of President Bouteflika and his brother Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman."

The frequent visits and regular meetings of the Joint Committee for Cooperation between the two countries are good indicators of the developed relations in all fields, but especially in economic and cultural areas. Both parties also look forward to leveraging the bilateral cooperation to reach high levels of the brotherly relations uniting the two countries in order to meet their aspirations," said the diplomat.

El Hassani, his wife and the consulate staff received Ambassador Jamal Abu Al-Khoyour, director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Makkah Region branch, Saudi dignitaries, senior officials, consul- diplomats, members of the Algerian community and media personnel.

The ceremony began with the Algerian and Saudi national anthems, followed by the welcome speech by the consul general.

On Nov. 1, 1954, Algeria was liberated from French colonial powers at the end of a bloody revolution in which more than 1.5 million people were martyred.
