Al Yasmin students excel in model UN conference

November 15, 2017

RIYADH — Al Yasmin International School, Riyadh, won the First Runner Up Trophy in the recently held Model United Nations Conference – 2017 at Dammam.

The Model United Nations Conference annually draws participants from different schools around Saudi Arabia to address current global issues. Student delegates from different schools representing the 8 countries, Russia, New Zealand, Georgia, Poland, Venezuela, Kuwait, Czech Republic and Bolivia discussed global issues and gained valuable experience.

The theme for the conference was ‘Together for a better tomorrow.’ At Zonal level Al Yasmin International School secured the First Runner up Trophy and qualified for the Finals.

The issues discussed at the conference were under two topics. ‘Harmonizing National Development Plans with 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development ’ for General Assembly and ‘Cyber Security and the Threat of Cyber Warfare’ for Security Council.

The Model United Nations Conference was an authentic replica of the UN Session. The students, known as “delegates”, were the ambassadors of UN member states, represented different countries to debate current issues.

They prepared the draft resolutions and strategies, negotiated with supporters and adversaries, resolved conflicts, and navigated the UN’s rules of procedure — all in the interest of mobilizing “international cooperation” and to resolve problems that affect almost every country. Soon after the judges feedback, the winners were declared and prizes were distributed by the dignitaries who attended the conference.

The delegates from Al Yasmin International School, Riyadh, bagged the First Runner Up Trophy. The student delegates who represented New Zealand and Russia from Al Yasmin International School were Ms. Merin Mary, Ms. Samvedya, Ms. Meghna Annup, Mohammed Omar, Mohammed Zohair and Sinan.

The participants and the winners were awarded with certificates and trophies as a token of appreciation. — SG
