RIYADH
— Anyone who dares physically attack a teacher or any staff member will be committing a crime punishable by 10 years in prison, or a fine of SR1 million, or both punishments together, Minister of Education Ahmed Al-Issa has said.

The minister was talking during a debate on the procedural guidelines to protect the educational institutions and their staff on Monday.

Leading officials from the ministry and a number of other concerned departments participated in the debate.

"Any physical attack against any of the ministry's staff will be considered homicidal crime that warrants imprisonment and fine," the Makkah newspaper quoted the minister as saying.

Asked if the ministry was planning to appoint security guards in boys schools as is the case with girls schools, the minister said the ministry was considering this.

"We are also planning to expand the use of the surveillance cameras in schools at all educational levels," he added.

The minister said the procedural guide was not limited to a particular educational level but will cover all stages of general education.

He said the guide was reviewed by a number of legal experts before it was finally approved and that it was also thoroughly revised by the ministry's legal department.

According to the minister, the guide will be continuously updated to cope with new developments.

The ministry is also working on a document specifying the behavior of staff, he said, adding that the document will soon be issued.

"We are building a culture of mutual respect and positive interaction among all the ministry's staff," he said.
