LA JOLLA, US — Sweden’s Alex Noren shook off a disappointing double bogey Saturday, closing strong at Torrey Pines to take a one-shot lead at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Noren carded a three-under par 69 to take the 54-hole lead on 11-under 205.

He was one stroke in front of Ryan Palmer, the overnight leader who was atop the leaderboard much of the day but followed an eagle at the 13th with bogeys at 14 and 16 to come in with a one-over 73 for 206.

Americans J.B. Holmes and Michael Kim shared third on 207, with former world No. 1 Jason Day of Australia and England’s Justin Rose among a group of seven sharing fififth place on 208.

With 14-time major champion Tiger Woods in the spotlight in his first US PGA Tour tournament since he missed the cut at Torrey Pines last year, Noren made a quiet ascent up the leaderboard.

After five pars he drained a 38-foot eagle putt at the sixth.

He was disappointed to give two shots back with a double-bogey at the 12th, where he need four shots to reach the green.

But he responded with three birdies the rest of the way, taking the lead with a two-putt birdie at the par-five 18th.

Li bags Dubai title

China’s Li Haotong secured the biggest title of his young career Sunday, a blistering finish helping him see off the challenge of Rory McIlroy to win the $3 million Dubai Desert Classic.

Li led by a stroke overnight but wobbled in his final round before a strong finish gave him a three-under-par 69 — secured with a birdie at the last — for a winning total of 265, 23-under par.

The 22-year-old’s score was a new tournament record and it allowed him to win by a shot from McIlroy, who also had a 69 to finish on 22-under, and becomes the first Asian winner of the event.

Tyrrell Hatton of England moved to third place with a six-under-par 66 to finish on 268, but it could have been better if he had not hit his second shot into the water on the par-5 18th hole.

He was followed by France’s Alexander Levy in sole fourth place at 19-under-par 269.

Henderson leads Feng

Canada’s Brooke Henderson completed a level par 73 Saturday to seize a one-stroke lead over China’s top-ranked Feng Shanshan when darkness halted the second round of the Bahamas LPGA Classic.

The season-opening event, shortened to 54 holes after brisk winds played havoc Friday, will attempt for a third day to finish the second round and make the cut Sunday before trying to complete round three also.

A pack of five players were two strokes off the pace at three-under, including Americans Ryann O’Toole and Danielle Kang in the clubhouse on 143, compatriot Lexi Thompson with 10 holes to complete, Spanish rookie Luna Sobron Galmes also with 10 holes remaining and Taiwan’s Hsu Wei-Ling with the back nine still ahead of her.

Kang, last year’s Women’s PGA Championship winner, also posted a 73 Saturday. — Agencies
