JEDDAH
— Saudis registered with the Ministry of Labor and Social Development’s freelance program via freelance.910ths.sa now have the option of 94 categories of freelance jobs.

Freelance jobs include those in sales and marketing, accounting and consultancy, writing, data analysis, telecom and web development, translation, design and creativity, network and information technology, audiovisual, health and beauty, art and entertainment, crafts, sports, etc.

So far freelance jobs are only open to Saudis. Children of Saudi women married to non-Saudis are not yet allowed to register.

Applicants may register online, they need to be between 18 and 60 years of age, have Abshir accounts and need to file documents proving their skills.

Applicants will need approval from the regulating bodies in the field, such as the Public Transport Authority, the Saudi Council of Engineers, Saudi Organization for Certified Public Accountants, Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage among others.

However, only one job is permitted for each individual and if they seek to change their job they need to wait for one month to get a new license for a new job specialization.

Freelancers will be registered at Bahr platform — an e-market — to get work offers. They will be allowed to display samples of their work and be rated by people who have had business with them.

Waleed Al-Kalash, general manager of the General Department of Policies and Labor Market Standards at the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, said they are keen to add new freelance jobs if required.

He was speaking on Wednesday at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) to announce new freelance job categories and regulations for people wanting to be certified freelancers.

Of the registered people, 65% have previous experience in the field they apply for.

Some 50 percent of registered individuals said they registered to make extra income while 14 percent said they opted for freelance job because of flexible working hours.

In an earlier announcement, ministry’s spokesman Khlaed Aba Al-Khail said that a total of 6,530 Saudi males and females have registered with the freelance program since its launch on Oct. 10. Out of whom 2,018 females and males were issued self-employment documents.

Aba Al-Khail said the program allows freelance workers to freely subscribe with the GOSI as HRDF will pay for a percentage of their insurance subscriptions for two years, which are directly sent on a monthly basis to the organization.
