Obtaining doctorate for enhancing one’s image

Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Omar

Al-Jazeera newspaper

You may be surprised to know that former Cuban President Fidel Castro was a doctorate in law, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel has a doctorate degree in quantum chemistry and former US President Barack Obama also has a doctorate degree in law. However, none of them ever introduced themselves to the public as doctors. I always thought it was normal to be introduced as a doctor because that is the way representatives at the Arab League are usually introduced in the media. However, there are ministers who point out that they prefer to be referred to by their designations.

Some people think that doctorates negatively affect people. Some people believe that they have better ideas than others because they have accumulated wider knowledge throughout the years. Our society is focused on obtaining doctorates to enhance their image. I remember noticing the word “doctor” when I was looking for my name on a list in an exhibition. I saw the word on the names of other people there.

Unfortunately, doctorates are now becoming as fancy as clothes or jewelry items that everyone wears to show off. I remember watching people applying in the Ministry of Higher Education by using their doctorate degrees, even though they really do not add any value to their job prospects.
