JEDDAH — 'Al-Asouf’ is a Saudi drama serial depicting Saudi life and society in the 70s. The series, aired everyday on MBC network during Ramadan, caused a stir in Saudi society as it enthralls the viewers and attracts reactions from many Saudis.
Initial episodes of Al-Asouf starring Nasser Al-Qasabi presented the lifestyle of the old generation and showcased some of the old habits, culture, traditions of many social aspect of life including marriage.
Although some Gulf citizens assume that the drama serial is a strong work compared to other serials in the Gulf this year, many people believe that Al-Asouf is misrepresenting the reality of the Saudi culture. One of the Saudis tweeted a question asking why does Al-Asouf presenting wrong events and facts about our society?
Another social media user, Abdullah, explained that he did not know about Najd and its people except the good, religiosity and generosity of its men. Al-Asouf, he says, is distorting this beautiful picture.
“I was born in Riyadh and lived in it part of my youth. What I knew in the community is not what is presented in Al-Asouf,” another user wrote.
Those liking the serial do so because of the high quality production and the way the message of the incidents is delivered. Ohoud, one of Al-Asouf viewers, mentioned on twitter that she liked the idea of presenting old events, particularly weddings.
She said, “This is the first time I live the atmosphere of the old wedding at this level by watching Al-Asouf. The serial's direction and photography are very strong and the message reached us through the atmosphere in all its simplicity.”
Al-Asouf is not the first Al-Qasabi starred serial to represent the Gulf and the Saudi society. It is the first drama serial for him since ‘Tash Ma Tash’ and ‘Selfie’ comedy serials.
